Touch Down in the UK

Updated: Sep 5, 2020

Current international DClinPsy trainees shared their tips and advice on getting around London and other UK cities from various UK airports.

If you are settling in London, you can make your way to your accommodation using public transport, an uber, or an airport taxi /transfer service once you arrive in London. These are available around the clock from Heathrow Airport.

You can also choose to book a car from a licensed minicab service in advance; these tend to be the cheaper than uber and airport cabs. These services are quite reliable and can get you to the city centre for £25-60, depending on where you live. Here is a list of websites that provide minicab services:

Alternatively, you can download ride sharing applications such as Uber, Swift cars, Kapten, Ola and Gett.

Express Trains such as Heathrow Express, Gatwick Express and Stansted Express are the fastest but are also more expensive than other forms of transport to reach Central London. Advance tickets are available online at discounted rates. For a more economical option, you can travel either via London Tube or National Rail. From Heathrow Airport, you can take the Piccadilly Line to Central London. You will need to purchase an Oyster Card (deposit of £5) from the ticket office or the automated machine at the station. We recommend topping up an additional £20 to cover your first few journeys in London. From Gatwick Airport, you can travel using Thameslink or Southwestern Railway that stops at Clapham Junction and Victoria Station.

Do not forget to check www.tfl.gov.uk to ensure your trip is not affected by train maintenance, you can download the Tube Map app to get all the journey options and to check if a station is accessible (i.e., step-free access).

If you are travelling to other UK cities from London, you will either have to transit in one of the London airports or take the National Rail services. Always make sure you know and you reserve enough time for travelling to where your flight / train departs.
